North American final

Updated: Feb 23

Canada Defeats USA in Overtime to Win Inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off.

In a thrilling finale to the first-ever 4 Nations Face-Off, Team Canada edged out Team USA 3-2 overtime on Thursday night at Boston’s TD Garden. Connor McDavid sealed the victory with a dramatic game-winning goal, securing Canada’s championship in this midseason international tournament organized by the NHL.

The game started with high intensity, and Nathan MacKinnon opened the scoring for Canada in the first period. Off a pass from Thomas Harley, MacKinnon fired a wrist shot from the top of the slot, beating Connor Hellebuyck to make it 1-0.

However, the USA responded just before the first intermission. Auston Matthews nearly scored on a wraparound attempt, but Canadian goaltender Jordan Binnington made the initial save. The rebound landed before Brady Tkachuk, who tapped it in to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second period, the Americans took the lead when Jake Sanderson capitalized on a deflected pass to beat Binnington, making it 2-1. But Canada answered six minutes later—Sam Bennett received a feed from Mitchell Marner and fired a perfect shot into the top corner to level the score at 2-2.

With the game deadlocked after regulation, overtime delivered non-stop action. Binnington made several key saves, denying both Matthews and Tkachuk on golden scoring chances. Then, reminiscent of Sidney Crosby’s 2010 Olympic heroics, McDavid took matters into his own hands, skating through the USA’s defense and beating Hellebuyck with a slick finish to claim victory for Canada.

The win gives Canada the first-ever 4 Nations Face-Off title and cements McDavid’s status as a clutch performer on the international stage. While Team USA came up short, the tournament showcased elite talent and set the stage for more intense international hockey battles.
